About the courseThe 8th grade social studies course picks up where students left off in 7th grade. Students begin the course by examining the controversial events leading up to the Civil War and end the course with an in-depth analysis of World War II. The course puts a strong emphasis on reading, writing, and speaking skills. Many of the tools and skills students learn in English Language Arts will also be used throughout the year in social studies. Being able to read challenging texts, develop high-quality writing, and speak with confidence are vital for success in both high school and college.
Students will not simply regurgitate historical knowledge and facts. Rather, they will be pushed to apply what they learn through a variety of engaging assignments, activities, and projects. As students progress through the course, they will be challenged to consider multiple perspectives and form their own interpretation of American History. After completing this course, students will have a deeper understanding of how past events have shaped our present society. |
